Since April 2023, phase 2 of the Welsh government’s Flying Start programme has provided 12.5 hours of free childcare each week for eligible 2 year olds. So far over 10,000 children have benefited, exceeding the initial goal of 9,500.

The Flying Start Team based in the Mem Community Centre in Nantymoel are a shining example of one of the many first class childcare facilities we have rooted in the heart of our communities, providing an essential and much loved service, supporting children and their families. I was delighted to meet with the team recently to hear about the fantastic work they do.

As one of the Welsh Labour Government’s defining policies here in Wales, the first ever Flying Start began in Caerau,  Maesteg. The programme has exceeded expectations providing high quality learning and care and supporting early year child development with a focus on Welsh medium provision too.
