The global Eco-Schools program, which empowers 19.5 million children across 70 countries to enact positive environmental changes in their schools and local communities, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Welsh schools, in particular, have been leading the way, with an impressive 90% participating in the Eco-Schools Programme – one of the highest participation rates in the world.

The huge importance these eco-schools play can be seen across Ogmore with primary school children from Hendreforgan and Abercerdin, Nantymoel and Blaengarw, Ysgol Gyfun Llanhari and Llanharan, Bryncethin, Cefn Cribwr, Nantyffyllon and lots more in between, getting involved to make their communities greener.

The eco-schools program helps break down large global issues, like global warming, into smaller manageable themes to help young people think of actions they can do on a more local level. From introducing meat free days at canteens, to reducing schools use of single use plastic, encouraging recycling and leading climate conferences, these children are helping shape their own future world for the better.

Huw Irranca-Davies MS for Ogmore recently met with the children from Betws primary School, on a trip to the Senedd.  With a focus on ‘investigating recycling’ the pupils were excited to learn about the bigger impact schools like theirs have had on helping Wales become the second-best country in the world for recycling.

Huw Irranca-Davies said: “I was really pleased to welcome the pupils of Betws primary School. The pupils told me how they value the space outside their school and how important it is for wildlife, education, and play. I also heard how they are working hard to achieve their 4th Green Flag award – also known as the platinum eco award – and I wish them all the very best in achieving it. It’s clear these pupils, like so many other young people around Wales, have a genuine enthusiasm for recycling, protecting nature and the environment.”

The dedication and energy of these young green champions show just how vital the Eco-Schools program is in raising a generation committed to sustainability and environmental care.

Well done to all the pupils across Ogmore who are working so hard towards their next prestigious and internationally recognised ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ Echo-School Award.
